With a mandate to protect public safety and prevent economic loss from potential dam failure and faced with a rise in the number of high hazard dams, the state dam safety officer’s role has never been more important. However, state dam safety programs are challenged by a lack of adequate resources.

Why? Traditional methods of ground survey and inspection often prove excessively resource-intensive when coping with the expanding urban development alongside the flood plains of dams. Moreover, these methods lack visual inspection, leading to uncertainty regarding the accuracy of dam hazard classifications that dam owners have self-certified. Additionally, urban changes occurring between inspections, which could impact hazard classifications, often go unrecorded and unaddressed for extended periods, far from the ideal scenario.
